Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis?
Osteoarthritis is wear-related damage to the cartilage in a joint and usually affects the joints you have used most. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the joint lining, often symmetrically and with morning stiffness. They are managed differently, so an accurate diagnosis matters before any treatment plan.
Can arthritis be managed without surgery or long-term steroids?
Many patients can reduce pain and improve function through a combination of movement, weight management, anti-inflammatory nutrition, acupuncture and physical therapies. Whether that is enough to avoid surgery depends on how advanced the joint damage is. weMED does not promise that surgery can be avoided and reviews imaging before making recommendations.
Does acupuncture help arthritis pain?
The American College of Rheumatology’s osteoarthritis guideline conditionally recommends acupuncture for knee, hip and hand osteoarthritis. At weMED it is used as part of a broader plan rather than on its own, and responses vary between patients.
What happens at the first arthritis visit?
A history and physical, review of imaging and labs you already have, and diagnostic testing where needed to distinguish inflammatory from wear-related arthritis. You leave with a plan covering movement, nutrition, pain management and any integrative therapies that fit your case.
Do I still need my rheumatologist?
Yes, if you are under rheumatology care for an inflammatory arthritis. weMED’s program is intended to work alongside that care, not to replace disease-modifying treatment.
